About CAT:

CAT (Common Admission Test conducted) is the most popular management entrance exam in India, conducted by one of the IIM’s (Indian Institute of Management) on a rotational basis. CAT is the entrance exam for more than 150 management institutes across India, including the 20 IIMs. The online exam is conducted every year, the WAT/GD/PI round for IIM admissions takes place from Feb to April. The academic sessions at IIMs begin in the month of June.

CAT focuses on general aptitude (English, Math, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning) which are key areas tested in most competitive exams such as Bank PO, SSB, Campus placements etc. What makes CAT special is the quality of opportunities it opens for you. The CAT exam is considered by many as the top of all management entrance exams.

Eligibility Criteria

CAT Eligibility Criteria:

CAT 2020 Eligibility - Graduation Marks

The basic eligibility criteria for CAT exam is Graduation with minimum 50% marks in aggregate. CAT eligibility criteria for General and Reserved category students are as follows:

General and Non-Creamy Layer-Other Backward Groups (NC-OBC):

The candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a university or educational institution recognized by the Government of India. The candidates must have scored at least 50% marks in Graduation (or equivalent) in any stream. Or

Candidates must be in their final year of Graduation or awaiting result. Or

Candidates must have professional degrees like CA/CS/ICWA with 50% marks in aggregate.

Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Person with Benchmark Disability (PwD):

Candidates belonging to SC/ST/PwD categories must have scored 45% marks in aggregate in Graduation (or equivalent) in any stream. Or

Candidates must be in their final year of Graduation or awaiting result. Or

Candidates must have professional degrees like CA/CS/ICWA with 45% marks in aggregate are also eligible to apply.

CAT 2020 Eligibility in case of Equivalent Degrees:

In case the marking scheme of any candidate’s Bachelor’s degree is in grades or CGPA, percentage of marks would be calculated on the basis of practice as followed by the respective University/Institution.

If any University/Institution confirms that they do not follow any scheme for converting CGPA into marks, the calculation will be done by dividing the candidate’s CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA, and multiplying the result with 100.

Reservation Criteria

CAT Reservation Criteria:

A certain percentage of seats in IIMs are reserved for SC, ST, OBC, PwD and EWS candidates as per government rules. The underneath table provides an overview of reservation:

Application Form

CAT 2020 Application Form:

CAT 2020 Application Form is expected to start from 8 August 2020 – 26 September 2020.The entire procedure will be conducted in online mode only at iimcat.ac.in.

Steps to Apply for CAT 2020:

Registration for the exam is generally a four-step procedure. Read carefully all the instructions mentioned at the start before beginning to fill up the form. In case of filling incorrect information your form will be rejected and fee will also be forfeited.

The steps are as follows:

Step 1: Registration – First of all you have to register yourself at the official website of CAT (www.iimcat.ac.in), for registration you must enter your email id, phone number, and date of birth.

Note: Number and e-mail ID must be active, as the entire communication related to the exam will be notified on it.

Step 2: Fill CAT Application Form – Enter your personal details, communication details, academic details, work experience, program preference and exam center preference.

Note: In case, any information is found incorrect / false, there is a risk of application rejection. Although one-time facility to make corrections in the form is also provided. 

Step 3: Upload Documents – Scan and Upload your documents (Photograph, Signatures & Required certificated) according to CAT 2020, Photo Size, Dimension, Format must as directed.

  • Step 4: Application Fee Payment - CAT 2020 Application Fee can be paid through only online mode i.e. by net banking/ debit card/ credit card. The application Fee which charges the General and NC-OBC aspirants is RS.1900 and for the Reserved aspirants (SC/ST) will require submitting RS.950.

 

CAT Application Form Status:

After CAT Application Form is finally submitted, status confirmation message will pop-up on the screen, along with an email and a message on the registered mobile number are sent related to the status of the application.

If the application form is successfully submitted, the application status is show “Successfully Submitted” else “Application Rejected”.

Note: As the application process of CAT 2020 is completely online, so no delay can occur during final submission.

Application Correction

CAT 2020 Application Form Correction:

It may be possible that some of the candidates had entered incorrect details due to hurry of lack of proper information or documents.

As CAT Exam is an important exam, the exam authority allows candidates to make corrections in few entries only.

In case, any information is found incorrect, there is a risk of application rejection. This is a one-time facility to make corrections in the Form.

So, it is advised that, before filling form, read all information carefully and collect all document at a single place and arranged in the same manner as it required. At the time of finalise or submitting the form cross check all information twice, and to avoid hurry fill application form at-least three-four day before last date.

Exam Pattern

CAT 2020 Exam Pattern:

  • Exam Mode: The CAT 2020 Exam will be a Computer Based Test (CBT) that is online.
  • Number of Set: In the question paper, there will be two sets of questions- Objective and Subjective.
  • Total Questions: 100
  • Total Marks: The exam will be of total 300 marks.
  • Time Duration: Time duration of 180 minutes i.e. 3 hours, will be allotted to complete the paper.
  • Number of Sections: Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, and Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning
  • Marking Scheme: For every correct response, 3 marks will be given. -1 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.

CAT 2020 Syllabus:

The syllabus of CAT 2020 contains the three sections – VARC, QA and DILR, candidate have to prepare it thoroughly to clear the exam and score high percentile.

Verbal Ability (VA): important Points of observation 

  • Approximate number of questions asked from 7-11
  • Sectional weightage of this section is around 7-11 percent
  • This section contains all non-MCQs, which means the candidates have to type in the answer in the computer
  • There is no negative marking in VA as the questions are non-MCQ type
  • Types of questions range from vocabulary usage, error correction in a para, para-jumbles, out of context sentence in a para, and sentence completion to analogies and critical reasoning

Reading Comprehension (RC): important Points of observation 

  • Approximate number of questions asked from 24-28
  • Sectional weightage of this section is around 24-28 percent
  • The type of questions are all MCQs, hence there is negative marking of -1
  • CAT has a mix of RC passages, on an average 4-3 long passages and 2-3 short passages
  • According to the trend of the last three years, long passages are of 900 word and short passages are of 600 words
  • Topics of these RCs range from science, history, politics, environment, society to literature, mythology and abstract topics

Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation:

  • Number of MCQs and non-MCQs vary every year. Past trends observation shows the number of MCQs in QA section range from 24-27 and non-MCQs range from 7-10
  • There is negative marking for MCQs
  • There is no negative marking for non-MCQs

Admit Card

CAT 2020 Admit Card:

CAT 2020 admit card will be issued only to the successfully registered candidates. The admit cards will be issued only on online and to be downloaded from the official website at www.iimcat.ac.in. Candidates can download their CAT 2020admit card in stipulated period only.

How to download CAT 2020 admit card:

       Click on login and fill details of your application

       Go to admit card tab

       Click on download button to save a copy of your CAT 2020 admit card

CAT admit card is a mandatory document to be carried to the exam center. The candidates must make sure they carry two copies of CAT 2020 admit card along with a photo ID card issued by Government of India to the exam hall.

Note:

       Without Admit Card candidate not allowed under any circumstances.

       The candidates must also note that, digital or photo copy of the admit card will be considered invalid, so they must download their admit cards on A4 size paper and affix their photo (same as uploaded) on it.

Result

CAT 2020 Result:

CAT result 2020 will be expected to announced in the first week of January 2021. On official website of the IIMCAT, the result cum scorecard will be available for download. An SMS will also be sent to all test-takers, informing them about their CAT Percentile. The CAT 2020 result cum scorecard will contains candidate’s scaled scores (sectional and overall) and percentile (sectional and overall). Save the CAT 2020 result and carry with at time of counselling.

Cut off

Expected CAT 2020 Cut Off:

The program of admission to the management program will be based on the CAT 2020 cut marks. The exam conducting authority will release the cut off for various category after a few days of online review of releasing of result. The candidates those will obtain the marks equal or above than the cut off marks can participate for the admission. The cut off will be varied every year for each category.

FAQs CAT-2020:

Q. What is the minimum academic eligibility criteria for writing CAT 2020?

A. A bachelor’s degree from a recognized institute is compulsory and mandatory for taking the CAT 2020 exam, with the minimum percentage requirement of 50% in the qualifying examination for Unreserved category.

Q. Are students in the final year of examination eligible to apply for the CAT?

A. Yes, students can apply but their admission on the basis of their CAT result will be provisional until they produce their final year graduation marksheet with required percentage.

Q. I have completed my Bachelor’s degree, but have a backlog. Can I apply for CAT 2020?

A. Yes, you are eligible to apply for CAT provided your aggregate is 50%.

Q. I have not completed Graduation but I am pursuing CA. Am I eligible to ap-ply for CAT 2020?

A. No, you are not eligible to apply for CAT. In case of absence of Graduation degree, you will be required to complete your professional degree to be able to apply.

Q. Is there any age restriction for taking the CAT 2020?

A. No, there is no age restriction to take CAT 2020.

Q. Do the non-MCQ type questions carry equal marks as MCQs?

A. Yes, all questions carry equal marks. However, for non-MCQ type questions, you must type the answer on the computer screen in the given space.

Admission Procedure

CAT 2020 Admission Procedure:

There will be no centralized counselling will be held for admission. Various participating institutions will announce their respective cut off marks for admission into management programmes through CAT 2020 score. Candidates have to qualify the individual cut off score of the respective institute to get selected for admission. Each IIM will send visiting letters directly to the shortlisted candidates.

Shortlisted candidates will be intimated by various IIMS and participating institutions. Candidates have to appear for Written Aptitude Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) rounds at the allotted institutions within the prescribed time period. Admission of a candidate also depend on the applicant’s previous academic records, relevant work experience and overall performance.
